Foreword
If fifteen years ago, when the USSR was collapsing, I had noticed a book on the shelves about “changing the world,” I imagine I would have passed it by. Such topics, I would have assumed, were for philosophers, mystics, or ideological fanatics. Such a slogan had no real political relevance, either as a desired goal or as a likely possibility. Our Western societies certainly needed reforming, but few people thought in terms of whole new systems, or questioning the wisdom of such basic things as progress and capitalism.

This isn’t a crisis. This is the new business of profit without risk. It isn’t even really a ‘bail out’. The new normal is a no risk machine for expropriating public wealth. The banks can now buy what ever they want, the higher the risk the better, because the new system guarantees that there is no risk for them. The banks can speculate on sovereign debt, currencies and commodities knowing that if they are in the elite, they will be bailed out. Not in the spectacularly embarrassing fashion of 07-08 but in the low key ways dreamt up in the last two years. A plethora of ‘exceptional’ funding measures, bond purchases and abrogations of the rule of law in favour of bank profit, which are all, in fact, bank bail outs at public expense.
Crisis? What crisis?
The only crisis for the elite and their banks will be if the next round of QE in America and of ECB bail outs for German and French Banks via Greece, Portugal and Ireland somehow do not happen. If there is a minor miracle and our leaders remember we exist – THEN there will be a crisis for the banks and the financial elite and some small hope for us.
Mark,
I agree with you that the most appaling thing about what is being done to us, is that workable, real solutions, measures which would properly regulate the banks and make them serve the greater good are at our hands and yet are studiously ignored.
The measures you advocate would address so many short-comings of our present system as would other equally straight forward and achievable options. We do have to ask why not one of them is being discussed let alone proposed and put in to action.
The idea of Community approaches is well put by Robert Moore in this two part interview with Sue Supriano on her Steppin out of Babylon series.

This series helped me to seek out a lot of information I did not have the tools to search out before as my framework of understanding in many of the areas simply didn’t exist.
I posted a link in a LinkedIn discussion on the Economist, a place where I try to provide the other view to the mainstream economics and free market exponents some of whom are happy to discuss things and some of who are still pretty shouty, part of what we do does involve kissing a lot of frogs to find our princes though.
I have just read this interesting Blog regarding the true nature of democracy and indeed if it has indeed existed anywhere in the past 6000 years.

At the most fundamental level, people council sessions could serve as a consensus factory, working on constantly evolving drafts of a totally revised constitution, from which parts or complete drafts can be moved forward for adaption in the form of initiatives. A perpetual revolution.

This is a wonderful vision of democracy, I am re-visiting it after first reading in 6 years ago. It had a strong influence in my own frame work of understanding for political economy so thank you for taking the time and trouble. I am sure others will have been similarly inspired.

The Three Pillars of Democracy
The following is an attempt to describe a vision for the direction our political systems could be evolved towards, that would in my opinion provide a framework around the harmonization processes the way Richard describes them. Harmonization would play the key role in the participatory pillar of democracy that I describe below, which I think would become the primary pillar of democracy, where the quality work is done.

MIND CONTROL AND THE ‘CONSPIRACY THEORY’ MEME. ECHOES OF GEORGE ORWELL AND ALDOUS HUXLEY. RICHARD MOORE.
Mind Control and The ‘Conspiracy Theory’ Meme. Echoes of George Orwell and Aldous Huxley
We are able to see the architecture – the structural patterns – of each kind of mind-control regime. This can help us recognize precursors – signs that such a future is coming our way.
Dystopian predictions
In 1984, George Orwell paints a picture of a dark, gray world. People are afraid to say anything contrary to the official party line, and surveillance is universal. Even thinking contrary to the party is a crime, and thoughtcrimes may be treated by radical psychological intervention. Information is closely controlled by the party media, and the historical record is routinely edited, so as to conform to the latest party statements.
By contrast, in Brave New World, Aldous Huxley paints a colorful, superficially pleasant world. Personal freedom of all kinds is encouraged, even to the point of being a cultural imperative. In the book a young boy is referred to a therapist, because he doesn’t want to play sex games with a girl classmate. An adult character is considered aberrant, because he is drawn toward a monogamous relationship. Drugs and distractions are readily available for mood enhancement.
Central to Huxley’s world is the abolition of the family. Sex never results in pregnancy, and embryos are grown in a production process, based on selected seed material. As part of the production process, an embryo can be fed or starved, at various stages of its development, so as to create classes of people (alphas, betas, etc) with differing levels of intelligence and skills. Quotas are set, regarding how many people of each class are going to be needed, and should therefore be produced.
Various kinds of conditioning are then used on infants in order to get them to accept their class, along with its prerogatives and restrictions, as being best for them. Children are raised on a communal basis, with no concept of parents, siblings, or family. From embryo to adulthood, the state has fine-tuned control over the development of the person, and of their thinking. In the resulting society, people behave as they were programmed to behave, and can’t imagine things being any different.
In Orwell’s world, wrong-thought (thought crime) is detected and suppressed. In Huxley’s world, wrong-thought is unlikely to arise. Orwell’s world suppresses the individual; Huxley’s world manufactures the individual. In both cases, mind control – control over what people are able to think – is the strategy of the regime, as its means of social control generally. Orwell explores a brute-force approach to mind control, while Huxley explores a scientific approach.
The novels are useful because they each take one of these basic approaches to mind control, and follow its consequences to the end. If you really want to suppress what people think, you’d need to do A, B, and C. If you really want to program people, you’ve got to start when they’re born and do X, Y, and Z. We are able to see the architecture – the structural patterns – of each kind of mind-control regime. This can help us recognize precursors – signs that such a future is coming our way.

WE LIVE IN A WORLD OF STORIES
Growing up in 1950’s America, I believed all the stories about the American Dream, American Benevolence, Prosperity via Capitalism, and Bringing Democracy to the Free World. That all sounds so quaint now, after Vietnam, 9/11, Guantanamo, torture, targeted killings, economic collapse, and all the rest. Nonetheless, it took me many years to unravel all the old stories, about how the world works, and to begin piecing together stories that match the facts and make sense.
