Trump and the war in Ukraine Some thoughts.
Hi David,
Who blew up Nordstream 2 and why?
I am reminded of an old blog you did about British interests in Ukraine on Golem.
I recommend reading The control of oil by Malcolm Blair and this series of articles by
Shimshon Bichler and Jonathan Nitzan
Obviously, the flow of arms to the region [and its associated conflicts] is anchored not in one particular cause but in the convergence of many: internal tensions [such as those leading to the Arab Spring], inter‑state confrontations [for example, the 1980‑88 Iraq‑Iran War], conflicts between coalitions of countries [the first, second and third Gulf Wars], superpower intervention [a permanent feature], radical and anti‑radical ideologies [the 1979 Iranian revolution, ISIS, etc.], nationalism [the Palestinian intifadas], clericalism [Iran, Egypt, Afghanistan, etc.], economic turbulence and business cycles [the unsatiated capitalist thirst for ‘cheap energy’]. . . . Yet, one way or another, these processes can be seen as already engulfed by and absorbed into the massive flow of the biggest prize of all: oil profits (Nitzan and Bichler 2007: 376, translated from the Hebrew).
Our analysis of this process has focused on what we called the ‘Weapondollar‑Petrodollar Coalition’ – a formidable albeit tenuous alliance between the largest armament contractors, the integrated oil companies, OPEC and various branches of western governments:
Dallas the old TV show was about "the Cartel" the Hydro Carbon Dollar cartel.

When Nordstream was blown up it was, for me, the perfect exemplar of economic warfare. And the way our progressive press made no attempt whatsoever to investigate it but were perfectly delighted to peddle the 'treat us like idiots' narrative that the Russians did it to themselves, only made it more obvious. Our press is utterly complicit. They have by and large with a few notable exceptions betrayed the entire notion of speaking truth to power and holding those powers accountable. Our press has become a propaganda arm whose purpose is to present and protect a narrative. So when Seymour Hirsch published his piece followed up by - was it a dutch investigation? - both showing that it was an allied act of war our press tried their best to bury the whole thing.

Reflections on Science, Society, and the Nature of Inquiry: A Personal Essay
As I celebrate my 57th birthday, I find myself reflecting not only on the passage of time but also on the complexities of the world around me. This moment of introspection has led me to consider the intersections of science, public health, and societal narratives. In an age where information is abundant yet often misleading, the importance of critical inquiry and open dialogue has never been more crucial.
The Parallels of Pandemics
The recent global challenges posed by COVID-19 have drawn stark parallels to the early responses to the AIDS crisis in the 1980s. Both pandemics ignited fear and uncertainty, and in their wake, they revealed the fragility of our societal structures and the limitations of our understanding. Edward Hooper’s work on the origins of AIDS, particularly his controversial theories regarding the polio vaccine, serves as a poignant reminder of how science can be both a beacon of hope and a source of contention. The suggestion that a well-intentioned medical intervention could inadvertently lead to new health crises raises profound ethical questions about the responsibilities of scientists and policymakers.
The Nature of Science and Settled Inquiry
One of the most pressing issues that emerge from these discussions is the concept of "settled science." In a world where scientific understanding is constantly evolving, the notion that any scientific theory can be deemed completely settled is inherently flawed. Science thrives on skepticism, debate, and the willingness to question established norms. The dismissal of dissenting voices, often labeled as "conspiracy theorists," stifles innovation and critical thought. It is imperative that we foster an environment where diverse opinions are not only tolerated but encouraged, allowing for a richer discourse that can lead to deeper understanding.
The Role of Media and Narrative Control
The media plays a pivotal role in shaping public perception, often framing narratives that guide societal responses to crises. The events of 9/11 and the COVID-19 pandemic illustrate how narratives can be constructed, manipulated, and sometimes weaponized to control public opinion. The term "conspiracy theory," for instance, has been employed to delegitimize questions surrounding the origins of COVID-19, echoing past attempts to silence inquiries into the AIDS epidemic. This trend underscores the necessity for critical media literacy, enabling individuals to discern fact from fiction and to engage thoughtfully with complex issues.
A Broader Perspective on Societal Narratives
Reflecting on the broader societal narratives over the past four decades reveals a trajectory shaped by globalization, climate change, and the rise of elite thought leaders. The tension between expert opinion and public sentiment has created a landscape where the voices of the many are often overshadowed by the few. As we navigate these challenges, it is essential to recognize that genuine understanding requires more than just acceptance of authority; it demands engagement with a multitude of perspectives.
The Importance of Inquiry
As I contemplate the future, I am reminded of the need for better questions—questions that challenge the status quo and seek to unravel the complexities of our existence. The pursuit of knowledge is not a linear path; it is a winding journey filled with uncertainties and ambiguities. Embracing this complexity allows us to cultivate a more nuanced understanding of the world, one that acknowledges the interplay between science, society, and individual experience.
Conclusion
In conclusion, my reflections on this birthday serve as a call to action. We must champion critical inquiry, encourage open dialogue, and resist the urge to simplify the intricate web of human experience. As we confront the challenges of our time, let us strive to ask better questions, embrace diverse perspectives, and foster a culture of curiosity and skepticism. Only then can we hope to navigate the complexities of our world with wisdom and grace.
